A US federal judge blocked the Pentagon from enforcing its decision to blacklist Anthropic, marking a major legal victory for the company behind the Claude chatbot. The order escalated a broader debate over how the US military should use AI.
US District Judge Rita F. Lin ruled on Thursday (August 28, 2026) that the Pentagon's decision to designate as a national security supply-chain risk was unlawful. In her 59-page order, Lin found that the government's actions amounted to retaliation against the company and violated constitutional protections.
The ruling follows months of tension between Anthropic and the US Defense Department over the military use of Claude. The dispute intensified after Anthropic refused to allow its technology to be used for fully autonomous weapons and mass domestic surveillance. The company argued that its systems should have safeguards around such uses.
