A fast-spreading fire in Ghaziabad's Kanawani slum cluster destroyed multiple huts, forcing residents to flee as firefighting teams rushed to contain the blaze amid chaos.

A massive fire swept through a cluster of jhuggis in Indirapuram's Kanawani village on Thursday afternoon, with thick black smoke rising high and visible from nearly two kilometres away. The sudden blaze triggered panic, as flames raced through the settlement and forced people to run for safety.

The fire broke out around noon in a tightly packed slum area. Fire tenders rushed to the spot soon after, and teams are working to bring the situation under control.

Fire spreads rapidly across densely packed huts

Locals said the fire started at around 12 noon and spread within minutes, quickly engulfing several huts before residents could react. Being a slum area, the blaze moved quickly from one structure to another. Many families were seen running out with children, essential belongings and gas cylinders in a bid to save their lives.

Several huts have been completely gutted. Two children are reported missing, raising fears among residents even as rescue efforts continue.

Firefighting teams, police and ambulances deployed

As soon as information about the fire was received, multiple fire brigade vehicles reached the site and began efforts to douse the flames. Police teams and administrative officials are also present at the location in order to monitor the situation.

So far, no casualties have been officially reported. Ambulances have also been deployed as a precautionary measure. The extent of damage is yet to be assessed.

Possible cause under investigation

Officials said the cause of the fire is not yet known. However, it is being suggested that the presence of plastic, wood and other highly combustible materials in the huts may have contributed to the rapid spread.

In some areas, cylinders kept inside the huts reportedly exploded, further intensifying the blaze. As a safety measure, nearby residents have been evacuated.
