The Trump administration is granting access to Anthropic's most powerful AI model on Friday, allowing major companies and government agencies to use the program.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick revealed the decision after federal restrictions had been placed on Claude Mythos 5 two weeks ago, according to a letter he sent to Anthropic and obtained by the Washington Examiner.
"I have determined that appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model," Lutnick wrote, citing "significant progress" that has been made in talks between the federal government and the AI firm.

"Anthropic has committed to work with the U.S. government on protocols and standards and releases for the Covered Models," Lutnick said, noting he reserves the "right to reevaluate and adjust the scope of license requirements on the Covered Models, should circumstances change." Other requirements "remain in effect until further notice," he added.
On June 12, the administration imposed export restrictions on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models over national security concerns that a group linked to China accessed Mythos. Anthropic responded to the restrictions by taking the programs offline worldwide and limiting access to foreign nationals.
Anthropic representatives have consistently met with administration officials since then, trying to find a mutual solution. Now, more than 100 U.S. institutions are granted access to Mythos.

"We received notice from the U.S. government that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a small group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers," an Anthropic spokesperson told the Washington Examiner. "We are working to provision the approved set of providers and restore their access to Mythos 5 as quickly as possible. We are pleased to see this progress and continue to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again."
The letter makes no mention of Fable. The model is essentially the same as Mythos but differs in its access and guardrails. Fable is the public version, whereas Mythos is reserved for cybersecurity and scientific organizations. It is unclear when Fable will be available for use once again.
ANTHROPIC MEETING WITH WHITE HOUSE TO RESOLVE MYTHOS AND FABLE AI RESTRICTIONS

Friday's development marks the latest sign of the Trump administration and Anthropic mending their working relationship.
Tensions between the two broke out in late February when War Secretary Pete Hegseth banned Anthropic's technology from being used by government employees and labeled the private company a "supply chain risk" to national security. After export restrictions were placed on Mythos and Fable, Hegseth said his decision to end the Pentagon's contract with Anthropic was "the right move."
