The language you choose while chatting with an AI chatbot may influence more than just the language of the response. A new study by Anthropic has found that Claude AI shows different behavioral traits depending on the language used, with Hindi conversations tending to be more warmer, encouraging and polite compared to English. The research analysed over 309,000 anonymised conversations across Claude Sonnet 4.6, Opus 4.6 and Opus 4.7 in the 20 most widely used languages on the Claude platform. Instead of testing factual accuracy, the study focused on conversations including advice, feedback and opinions to understand how Claude interacts with users. Anthropic grouped Claude's responses into four behavioural dimensions- Deference vs. Caution, Warmth vs. Rigor, Depth vs. Brevity, and Candor vs. Execution. As per the company, these categories help explain how the AI adapts the communication styles across languages. In the blog post, the company mentioned that the biggest difference was found in the Warmth vs. Rigor category. Claude expressed the highest levels of warmth in Hindi and Arabic. The chatbot, in Hindi, was more likely to use the polite language, humour and playful expressions along with reassurance and encouragement. It was also found validating users' ideas, adapt its tone to conversation and motivating the users to pursue their goals. Potential emissions from the turbines are far beyond the threshold that would require a federal permit, and would be released near predominantly Black communities already estimated to be suffering disproportionately high rates of lung disease, according to a Reuters analysis based on government data and information in the correspondence with regulators. The findings, which have not been previously reported, reflect how exploding electricity demand from AI data centers is driving companies to build off-grid power plants at a pace outstripping environmental oversight, with potentially big risks to public health. The number of unpermitted turbines identified by Reuters is about double what xAI has publicly acknowledged. The company previously said it was running 27 unpermitted turbines for Colossus 2 as of January and has argued the permits are not required. At least 57 of the 59 turbines are located in Mississippi, just over the state line from Tennessee where the data center is located. The xAI turbines are among scores of off-grid power plants for data centers proposed or under construction around the country. Local authorities often fast-track approvals in just weeks or months, without the years of environmental studies and public hearings typically required for such power generation projects that connect to the grid, Reuters has reported. Mississippi regulators in March issued a permit for permanent turbines for Colossus 2, allowing construction of 41 gas-fired turbines. The approval came three weeks after the state's only public hearing on the project. The xAI cluster of temporary turbines in Mississippi is already among the biggest off-grid data center power projects, according to Ben King, an analyst with think tank Rhodium Group, who reviewed the Reuters analysis. "This looks to be an unprecedented level of behind-the-meter gas being installed in one place," he said, referring to off-grid natural gas plants serving just one customer. The communications reviewed by Reuters show xAI, now owned by trillionaire Musk's SpaceX, has installed 57 off-grid turbines in Southaven, Mississippi, just across the state line from its Colossus 2 data center in Memphis, a facility supporting the Grok chatbot and other AI systems. The records show the company has also installed two other unpermitted turbines for the project on a different site. Reuters could not determine the location. The communications, obtained through a Reuters public records request, included emails between Trinity Consultants, representing xAI and subsidiary MZX Tech, and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). xAI did not respond to Reuters' request for comment. xAI's turbines are part of a widening environmental justice battle over whether the AI boom is adding disproportionate pollution burdens to communities of color. Civil rights groups including the NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center sued xAI in April to halt their operations, arguing the turbines produce emissions subject to the federal Clean Air Act and shouldn't be operated without permits. They contend the turbines are polluting homes, schools and churches in historically Black communities. "The scale of it is astonishing," said Patrick Anderson, an attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center. "This is an absolutely huge Clean Air Act violation that threatens public health." Securing a Clean Air Act permit would have exposed xAI's project to extensive review and public comment, potentially taking years. Mississippi environmental regulators and xAI have argued in court filings that the turbines are exempt because they are "mobile" and intended to operate onsite for less than a year. "MDEQ has determined that portable/temporary turbines do not require an air permit," the agency said in a statement to Reuters. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in January 2026 that even temporary turbines exceeding emissions thresholds must obtain permits. The agency, however, told Reuters it's considering changes allowing "regulatory flexibilities" for portable units while continuing to protect public health. xAI, the MDEQ and the EPA did not answer questions from Reuters about pollution impacts on communities of color from power generation to serve data centers. The U.S. Justice Department weighed in on the lawsuit in a June 15 filing, saying that restricting the turbines could threaten national security interests because xAI's systems support U.S. military operations, including operations involving Iran. The outcome of the lawsuit filed by civil rights groups could help define how environmental laws apply to the fast-growing AI sector, where companies are scrambling to bring power supplies online to support energy-intensive computing. "This sets up scenarios where the government can create sacrifice zones and tell communities they have to breathe illegal air pollution," said Mary Rock, a senior attorney for Earthjustice which is representing the NAACP and SELC. The dispute echoes the findings of a 2022 study by researchers from UCLA and Columbia University and published in the Nature Energy journal that found that previously redlined communities - where banks historically discriminated against Black mortgage applicants - now face disproportionately high exposure to pollutants from fossil fuel facilities. "Air pollution from these and other sources contributes to systemic racial disparities in chronic disease and ultimately shorter lives," Lara Cushing, a UCLA public health professor who co-authored the study, told Reuters. BIG EMISSIONS The emails reviewed by Reuters included the manufacturer emissions profiles for 32 of the 59 turbines, including 30 at the Southaven site. A Reuters analysis based on that information found that those 30 turbines alone could emit nearly 2,500 short tons of nitrogen oxide, 4,000 short tons of carbon monoxide and 22 short tons of formaldehyde annually, assuming they operate continuously at 80% of capacity. According to the EPA, gas turbines are typically operated at loads of 80% or more to achieve efficiency. Nitrogen oxides contribute to smog and respiratory inflammation, according to the American Lung Association. Carbon monoxide deprives the body of oxygen, and formaldehyde is a carcinogen. The xAI site's potential emissions far exceed a Clean Air Act threshold that requires permitting for facilities capable of more than 100 short tons annually of pollutants such as nitrogen oxide. "This is a massive amount of turbines and an unfathomable amount of air pollution," Southaven resident Shannon Samsa said in an interview. "It's not a hypothetical," she said, "that air pollution is bad for you." The nitrogen oxide emissions calculated by Reuters for about half the plant's turbines would put the facility "up there with some of the heaviest polluting natural gas power plants across the entire country," said Nicholas Mailloux, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who studies air quality and health benefits of the clean-energy transition. He said the facility would be on par with the top 25 U.S. gas plants for nitrogen oxide emissions, citing EPA data for actual emissions. Anthropic has started localizing Claude's pricing in India, its biggest market outside the U.S., as global AI companies increasingly tailor their offerings to win users in the world's most populous nation. Local pricing has begun to appear for some users in India on Claude's website and mobile apps. However, Anthropic has yet to enable payments via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's widely used instant payments network. Users still need to pay by card or through Apple's and Google's app store billing systems. This is unlike OpenAI, which rolled out Indian rupee pricing for ChatGPT in August with UPI support. Claude users in India have long sought rupee-denominated subscriptions, with dollar pricing and currency conversion adding friction to accessing the service. The move is particularly significant, as India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the service's second-largest market after the U.S., according to Anthropic. On Claude's website in India, Anthropic is listing Claude Pro at ₹2,000 (about $21) a month when billed annually, compared with $17 a month in the U.S. Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 (around $125) a month in India, versus $100 in the U.S., while Team plans start at ₹2,399 (around $25) per seat a month, compared with $20 in the U.S. The India prices include local taxes. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has attacked Anthropic over a new ad from the Claude maker which he said looked like 'satire'. The new attack by Altman comes amid the OpenAI's chief's ongoing feud with Elon Musk and the recent lawsuit filed by Apple over theft of confidential trade secrets. There's hope in hard questions." Anthropic wrote in a post X that contained a video containing what seemed like random pictures and posed questions over AI safety. Some of th questions in the video included, "Can AI be trusted?" and "If it ends up taking like almost all the jobs, then what does it mean to work?" Altman responded to the video writing, "i thought this was satire, kept looking for the handle to be spelled c1audeai or something" "hard questions are great but only if we deem you worthy enough to not silently downgrade you, or even get access at all" he added In a separate post on X that seemed to be aimed at OpenAI's rivals, Altman wrote, "come for the best model, stay because we don't treat you with contempt" Notably, this is not the first time that tensions have flared up between OpenAI and Anthropic. Anthropic has introduced Indian rupee-denominated pricing for its Claude subscription plans in India, with updated pricing now visible across individual and enterprise offerings on its onboarding page. The pricing includes GST for most plans and gives Indian users a clearer view of subscription costs in local currency. Individual User Plans For individual users, the Claude Pro plan is priced at Rs 2,033.05 per month, billed monthly plus GST. The company also offers a yearly billing option that gives a savings of 17 per cent. The Pro plan includes everything available in the free tier along with higher usage limits, Claude Code, Cowork, Claude Design, unlimited projects, access to Research, memory across conversations, access to more Claude models, Claude in Excel and Claude in Chrome. Anthropic has also listed the Claude Max subscription starting at Rs 11,999 per month, billed monthly and inclusive of GST. The Max tier includes all Pro features while offering users the choice of 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, higher output limits across tasks, priority access during periods of high demand, early access to advanced Claude features, and recommendations for Claude Code and Cowork workflows. Business and Enterprise Plans For businesses with 2 to 150 users, Anthropic has introduced a Claude Team plan with two-seat options. The Standard seat is priced at Rs 2,399 per user per month, including GST, with a monthly billing option of Rs 2,999. The Premium seat costs Rs 11,999 per user per month, including GST, or Rs 14,999 when billed monthly, and offers five times more usage than the standard seat. The Team plan includes a 200,000-token context window, usage credits available at API rates, Claude Code, Cowork, centralised billing and administration, single sign-on (SSO) and domain capture, administrative controls for remote and local connectors, enterprise deployment for the Claude desktop app, organisation-wide enterprise search, Microsoft 365 and Slack integrations, and a commitment that customer content is not used for model training. The introduction of local pricing across Claude's subscription tiers could make it easier for Indian individuals, startups and enterprises to evaluate and adopt the AI assistant without having to calculate costs in foreign currency. The FAA has closed its mishap investigation into SpaceX's last Starship-Super Heavy flight test, clearing the company for another attempt to demonstrate its next-generation reusable superheavy lift system as early as July 16. Starship Flight 13 is slated to launch between 6:45 -8:15 p.m. EDT/5:45-7:15 p.m. local time from SpaceX's Starbase facility in southern Texas. The goals of Flight 13 largely duplicate what was intended during Flight 12 on May 22, which was marred by problems with the new Starship Version 3 (V3) Raptor engines. On that flight, the Super Heavy booster deployed the upper stage Starship into a suborbital trajectory but failed to execute engine burns as expected for a soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico. "Slight differences in engine startup on the ship caused the directional flip of the booster to be off by approximately 90 deg.," SpaceX wrote in a July 13 update posted on its website. The Super Heavy booster attempted to perform a boostback burn for a controlled descent and splashdown, but five of its 33 engines failed to relight, cutting short the maneuver. "The Super Heavy on this upcoming flight has hardware modifications to improve re-light reliability, along with updates to engine alarms and aborts to match the conditions seen in the multi-engine flight environment," SpaceX said. Those include modifications to the engine startup sequence to make it "more robust to timing variability and more reliably flip in the desired direction, which is done to increase overall performance," it noted. The FAA said SpaceX's mishap report cited two most probable root causes for the loss of the Super Heavy booster: heat effects on propulsion system components during the ascent, and erroneous engine alarm system settings. "SpaceX identified four corrective actions, including vehicle hardware and software configuration updates to prevent a reoccurrence of the event," the FAA said in a statement on July 13. The Starship upper stage also experienced an engine issue during Flight 12, causing SpaceX to skip a planned engineering demonstration to relight the new Raptor 3 engine in flight -- a prelude to orbital flight and reentry. That test will be attempted during Flight 13. In addition, instead of flying and deploying dummy Starlink satellites, Starship for the first time will carry operational spacecraft. Following deployment into Starship's planned suborbital trajectory, 20 Starlink V3 satellites will extend their solar arrays and antennas and then attempt to connect with the larger Starlink constellation via high-capacity lasers. Since the satellites will be on the same suborbital trajectory as Starship, they are expected to reenter the atmosphere about 20 min. after deployment. "Six of the satellites have been modified with a suite of cameras to scan Starship's heat shield and transmit imagery ... to operators to continue testing methods of analyzing Starship's heat shield readiness for return to launch site on future missions," SpaceX said. As part of the test, several tiles on Starship have been painted white to simulate missing tiles and serve as imaging targets, it said. SpaceX also plans some tests of Starship's heat shield itself. The shield includes load-sensing tiles that will collect data as Starship experiences higher dynamic pressure during ascent than on previous flights, the company said.
