Anthropic's Mythos model sparks cybersecurity concerns

The limited release of Anthropic's new Mythos model is putting Washington officials on high alert after the AI firm's warning about the model's security risks sent shockwaves through and sparked debate in the tech industry. Within days of being informed of Anthropic's new technology, the White House ratcheted up a multipronged response involving Trump administration leaders across agencies to evaluate just how powerful AI is becoming. Anthropic's announcement follows years of AI warnings, but last week it seemingly landed differently, upping pressure on Washington to stay ahead even as some question the extent of the latest threat. "A bunch of people in the [Trump] administration are coming to the realization" AI development has not plateaued as some officials predicted last summer, Dean Ball, the co-author of the Trump White House AI Action plan, told The Hill in an interview Monday. "They are realizing, 'My goodness, I'm going to have to jump in here and get involved and get my hands dirty' because this is not being handled,'" said Ball, adding, "The administration was not prepared to deal with this, that's just the frank reality." Anthropic announced last week it will hold back the full release of Claude Mythos Preview, claiming the model is too dangerous for the public at this stage. The model was released to a small group of technology firms and critical software builders, which will use the model in their defensive security work and share their findings with Anthropic under a new initiative called Project Glasswing. Prior to external release, Anthropic briefed senior officials across the U.S. government on Mythos's offensive and defensive cyber capabilities, an Anthropic official confirmed to The Hill on Monday. On the same day Project Glasswing was announced, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened a group of Wall Street executives to discuss the cybersecurity concerns, multiple people familiar with the meeting told The Hill. "There's definitely a sense of urgency, it's something that is relatively new. The AI has developed a way to find hacks in other software," National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told Fox News on Friday.

Canada's AI minister says Anthropic withholding Mythos is 'responsible' - National | Globalnews.ca

Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon met on Tuesday with representatives of Anthropic -- the company that said its latest chatbot, Mythos, is too risky for public release last week. Anthropic released a system preview card surrounding its newest AI model, Claude Mythos, which the company stated was "substantially beyond those of any model we have previously trained" and therefore would not be released to the public, citing cybersecurity dangers. "Anthropic and the Canadian government are engaged in constructive, ongoing discussions," Solomon said in an emailed statement from his office to Global News. "I met with Anthropic this morning as part of our continued engagement with leading AI companies on safety, security, and Canada's sovereign interests. The Government of Canada takes the protection of its systems, its critical infrastructure, and Canadians' data with the utmost seriousness. Solomon stated that "Anthropic's approach of working with defenders first, rather than releasing this new model broadly, is the responsible path and gives people protecting critical systems a head start." Concerns about rapid AI development and ransomware have grown significantly amongst Canadians. A January 2026 federal report by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security stated that numerous Canadian organizations and businesses, "regardless of size or sector," as well as individuals, are susceptible to ransomware attacks. However, "critical infrastructure and large corporations" were found to be the top targets for ransomware activities.

Anthropic Redesigns Claude App on Desktop for Parallel Agents

Anthropic has released a redesigned Claude app for desktop that supports parallel agents so you can run more Claude Code tasks simultaneously. "Today, we're releasing a redesign of the Claude Code desktop app that includes a new sidebar for managing multiple sessions, a drag-and-drop layout for arranging your workspace, an integrated terminal and file editor, plus performance and quality-of-life improvements," the announcement post explains. "The new app is built for how agentic coding actually feels now: many things in flight, and you in the orchestrator seat." Here's what's new. New sidebar. The sidebar now displays active and recent sessions together, letting you moved between them more easily. You can also filter by status, project, or environment, or group the sidebar by project to find and resume sessions faster. Side chats. You can now kick off a side chat any time by typing Ctrl + ; (or Cmd + 😉 when you need to ask a question mid-task or branch off a conversation. Side chats get context from the main thread, Anthropic says, but they don't impact that thread so that tasks aren't misdirected. New and improved tools. The new app includes an integrated terminal for running tests and builds alongside your session, an in-app file editor, an improved diff viewer, and expanded preview support for HTML and PDF files. And these are all drag-and-drop capable, so you can position them as needed. CLI plug-in parity. Claude for desktop app now has parity with CLI plugins, so any centrally managed Claude Code plugins in your organization will work the same in the desktop app as they do in the terminal. You can still run sessions locally or in the cloud, and the Mac version of the app now supports SSH so you can access remote machines. (This already worked on Linux.) View modes. Claude for desktop supports three view modes-Verbose, Normal, and Summary-so you can customize its look and feel. Other changes. There are no keyboard shortcuts for session switching, spawning, and navigation, a usage button for displaying your context window and session usage together, and reliability and performance improvements throughout. The redesigned Claude desktop app is available now for all Claude Code users on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans, and via the Claude API. You can download it from the Anthropic website.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch, Starlink satellites from Vandenberg, CA Space Force Base

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- SpaceX plans to launch another batch of its Starlink internet satellites into low-earth orbit from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. The company plans to launch 25 Starlink satellites from its Falcon 9 rocket. According to SpaceX, it is targeting Monday, just after sunset, for a Falcon 9 launch of 25 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. SpaceX's previous rocket launches were seen by many flying across Southern California skies, including a launch on April 6, around the same time after sunset that could be seen easily in the clear skies above San Diego. The liftoff is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:40 p.m. PT. Possible Delays: Rocket launches can often be delayed by a few minutes or to a future date due to several factors, including weather changes or any unexpected issues with the rocket. This is the 21st flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, SpaceX said. The company said that following the stage separation, the first stage will land on the "Of Course I Still Love You" drone ship, which will be stationed in the Pacific Ocean. A live webcast of this mission will begin about five minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch on SpaceX.com. Previous Falcon 9 launches were live-streamed on the company's website. According to SpaceX, Falcon 9 is a "reusable, two-stage rocket designed and manufactured by SpaceX for the reliable and safe transport of people and payloads into Earth orbit and beyond." Falcon 9 is considered the world's first orbital-class reusable rocket. Starlink is "the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more," according to the service's website. The "constellation" of satellites consists of thousands of satellites that orbit Earth at an altitude of about 550 km, or 341 3/4 miles. The satellites connect to antennas that users set up at their homes to provide internet access.

NAACP sues xAI for 'unpermitted' gas turbines in Southaven

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The NAACP has filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against xAI and its subsidiary, MZX Tech. NAACP said it is suing the companies for their unlawful operation of dozens of unpermitted methane gas turbines to power its Colossus 2 data center in Memphis. The Southern Environmental Law Center and Earthjustice are representing the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP and the national NAACP. The NAACP's lawsuit was filed in the federal district court for the Northern District of Mississippi. "This lawsuit concerns the already-built, unpermitted power plant and follows a 60-day notice of intent to sue, which is required under the Clean Air Act and was sent to xAI in February," said NAACP. "xAI continues to unlawfully operate its power plant even after receiving the notice letter." According to the NAACP, they are asking the court to declare that xAI has violated the Clean Air Act, force xAI to stop operating unpermitted turbines at its Southaven facility, order xAI to install the best available control technology on the power plant, and assess financial penalties to xAI for every day it violated federal law. According to the suit, NAACP claims that xAI is illegally operating 27 gas turbines without an air permit in Southaven, Mississippi, effectively building a power plant for its Colossus 2 data center, which powers the company's chatbot, Grok. NAACP said that the company's failure to get a permit for its power plant, which is located near homes, schools, and churches, creates added health risks for families in North Mississippi and Memphis and is a violation of the Clean Air Act, which requires major sources of pollution to obtain air permits before being constructed or operated. "A data center should not be a potential death sentence for a community's health. By looking to evade clear air laws to operate dirty turbines that emit pollution and known carcinogens, these companies are following a shameful, familiar pattern: asking Black and frontline communities to bear the toxic brunt of 'innovation,'" said Abre' Conner, NAACP Director of Environmental and Climate Justice. "As we shared since xAI started operating in Memphis, our homes, churches, and playgrounds will not be sacrifice zones for Big Tech's convenience. The NAACP stands firm that true progress cannot be built by ignoring community health and our environment. Our right to clean air is not up for negotiation, especially when companies prove expediency not people is their priority." The association says the Southaven plant has the potential to emit more than 1,700 tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx) each year, and that the "illegal turbines" also have the potential to release up to 180 tons of fine particulate matter, 500 tons of carbon monoxide, and 19 tons of formaldehyde, a toxic, cancer-causing chemical, each year. "xAI's continued operation of these turbines without a permit and without adequate pollution controls is not only illegal, it's an insult to families living nearby who for months have expressed serious concerns about how air pollution from the company's personal power plant could impact their health and well-being," SELC Senior Attorney Ben Grillot said. "xAI must be held accountable for its reckless, unlawful actions -- and that's exactly what this lawsuit aims to do." This comes after the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality approved plans for 41 gas turbines at the xAI facility in Southaven in March. WREG has reached out to xAI for comment.

NAACP sues Musk's xAI, alleging illegal operation of gas turbines

WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) - The largest U.S. civil rights group on Tuesday sued xAI and a subsidiary, claiming they illegally operated more than two dozen gas turbines in Mississippi to power its Colossus 2 data center, posing a health risk to local residents. The NAACP, represented by Earthjustice and the Southern Environmental Law Center, sued xAI and subsidiary MZX Tech, charging they violated the federal Clean Air Act by running 27 gas-fired turbines before getting necessary air permits for its massive data center that powers xAI's Grok chatbot. Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI has invested more than $20 billion to build the data center in Southaven with the full backing of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, but the facility, as well as Colossus 1 just over the border in Memphis, Tennessee, has met heavy opposition from local communities due to their effect on local air and environmental quality. "By looking to evade clean air laws to operate dirty turbines that emit pollution and known carcinogens, these companies are following a shameful, familiar pattern: asking Black and frontline communities to bear the toxic brunt of 'innovation,'" said Abre' Conner, director of the Center for Environmental and Climate Justice at the NAACP. The NAACP announced its intention to sue xAI and MZX in February because the Clean Air Act requires 60 days of notice ahead of filing a lawsuit. Mississippi regulators held one public hearing that month about permits for those turbines after just a few days of public notice for the hearing, and subsequently approved the permits. xAI was not immediately available for comment. Earthjustice said that xAI's Southaven power plant has the potential to emit more than 1,700 tons of smog-causing nitrogen oxides (NOx) each year, a major source of smog in the greater Memphis area. They are also estimated to emit 180 tons of fine particulate matter, 500 tons of carbon monoxide, and 19 tons of cancer-causing formaldehyde. Kraken Moves Toward IPO as Valuation Drops to $13.3B - Blockonomi

Kraken disclosed insider-related security incidents that affected about 2,000 accounts without compromising client funds. Kraken confirmed it confidentially filed for an initial public offering, according to co-CEO Arjun Sethi. He disclosed the move on Tuesday at the Semafor World Economy summit in Washington, D.C. The filing follows a prior pause in listing plans as its valuation fell to $13.3 billion. Kraken confirmed it submitted a confidential IPO filing, and Arjun Sethi announced the update during a public event. He spoke at the Semafor World Economy conference in Washington, D.C., and addressed earlier reports. The company had paused earlier listing plans after crypto markets weakened and trading volumes dropped. The San Francisco-based exchange secured a $13.3 billion valuation in an April funding round. That figure marked a decline from its $20 billion peak recorded in late 2025. The round included backing from Citadel Securities and reflected changing investor sentiment. Sethi said Kraken wants to expand institutional-grade trading tools to retail clients. He compared the company's goals to services offered by Jane Street and JPMorgan Chase. He stated, "We aim to bring institutional-grade tools to retail users," while outlining product ambitions. Kraken recently obtained a master account with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. The account grants direct access to U.S. payment systems, including Fedwire. This access allows dollar settlements without intermediary banks, though it excludes interest on reserves and lending facilities. Deutsche Börse disclosed a $200 million investment in Kraken through a secondary share purchase. The transaction grants a 1.5% fully diluted stake in Payward Inc, pending regulatory approval. The companies expect the deal to close in Q2 2026. The investment expands a partnership announced in December 2025 between Kraken and Deutsche Börse. The collaboration targets regulated crypto trading, derivatives, tokenized assets, and institutional liquidity services. Both firms said the agreement seeks to connect traditional financial infrastructure with digital asset markets. Kraken also reported two insider-related security incidents involving support staff. The employees accessed limited client data through internal systems without authorization. About 2,000 accounts, representing 0.02%, were affected, and no client funds or trading systems were compromised. A criminal group later attempted extortion, claiming it possessed internal videos linked to the incidents. Kraken refused to pay and revoked access for the responsible individuals. The company notified affected users and cooperated with law enforcement while strengthening internal controls. Galaxy Digital reported a separate cybersecurity incident during the same week. The firm disclosed unauthorized access to a development environment. It stated that no client data or funds were impacted by that breach.

NAACP sues xAI for alleged Clean Air Act violations in Southaven

Jason Haley of Southaven, MS, gave public comment against the Southaven turbines permit for xAI that MDEQ Permit Board approved later in the meeting. This story will be updated. The NAACP has moved forward with its plans to sue xAI and its affiliate, MZX Tech LLC. On April 14, the NAACP and the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP filed a lawsuit against the aforementioned companies in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi. The lawsuit comes after a 60-day notice to sue filed by the NAACP on Feb. 13. (Both the lawsuit and the notice were filed by the Southern Environmental Law Center and Earthjustice on behalf of the NAACP and the Mississippi chapter of the NAACP.) The lawsuit alleges xAI has violated the Clean Air Act by operating 27 turbines without a permit at its 2875 Stanton Road facility. The Stanton Road facility is located at the former Duke Energy site. MZX Tech LLC purchased the site and the surrounding 114 acres in July 2025. The lawsuit also alleges that the 27 turbines could potentially emit more than 1,700 tons of smog-forming nitrogen oxides, which would make the xAI power plant the "largest industrial source of nitrogen oxides in the Greater Memphis area." xAI could not immediately be reached for comment. "...Between August and December 2025, Defendants xAI and its wholly owned subsidiary MZX Tech LLC ... installed and began operating twenty-seven polluting gas turbines ... in Southaven, Mississippi, which is in DeSoto County, without an air permit or regard for the health and safety of people living nearby," the lawsuit states. In August 2025, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality allowed the use of 16 unpermitted turbines at the Southaven site. That figure increased to 27 in December 2025, according to email correspondence between Arkansas-based Trinity Consultants and MDEQ representatives. In January, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updated its Clean Air Act regulation. The updated Federal Register outlines that all stationary and combustion turbines require permits, including temporary ones. On March 10, MDEQ approved a Prevention of Significant Deterioration (or PSD) permit for 41 turbines at xAI's Stanton Road power plant. That permit does not include the aforementioned 27 turbines. On April 9, NAACP, along with environmental advocacy groups Young, Gifted & Green and the Safe and Sound Coalition, filed an appeal with the MDEQ permit board regarding the PSD permit approval. NAACP sues xAI, alleging unlawful operation of gas turbines in Southaven

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (WMC) - The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) alleges that xAI violated the Clean Air Act by operating dozens of methane gas turbines in Southaven, Mississippi, before an air permit was granted. The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) and Earthjustice, representing the civil rights group, filed a lawsuit against the tech company and its subsidiary MZX Tech on Tuesday. The groups announced their intent to sue over xAI's power plant in Southaven back in February. In March, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality granted an air permit for xAI's 27 gas-powered turbines at the facility, which powers the Colossus 2 data center in South Memphis. The lawsuit filed Tuesday says that xAI violated the Clean Air Act by operating the turbines before the permit was granted. NAACP officials say the plant's turbines "have the potential to emit a staggering amount of smog-forming nitrogen oxides (NOx), likely making the facility the largest industrial source of NOx in the 11-county Memphis metropolitan area." "xAI's continued operation of these turbines without a permit and without adequate pollution controls is not only illegal, it's an insult to families living nearby who for months have expressed serious concerns about how air pollution from the company's personal power plant could impact their health and well-being," SELC Senior Attorney Ben Grillot said. "xAI must be held accountable for its reckless, unlawful actions -- and that's exactly what this lawsuit aims to do." The NAACP is asking the court to declare that xAI has violated the Clean Air Act, force xAI to stop operating unpermitted turbines at its Southaven facility, order xAI to install "the best available control technology" on the plant, and assess financial penalties to xAI for every day it violated federal law. "xAI has been pumping illegal pollution into this community in its rush to power the 'Colossus 2' data center. No company - and no industry - has a free license to pollute our air," said Laura Thoms, the director of enforcement for Earthjustice. "xAI isn't above the law, and we're filing this lawsuit to hold them accountable." Click here to sign up for our newsletter!

Kraken IPO Plans Move Forward After Confidential Filing, Co-CEO Sethi Revealed

Trusted Editorial content, reviewed by leading industry experts and seasoned editors. Ad Disclosure US crypto exchange Kraken has taken another step toward public markets after Co-CEO Arjun Sethi said Tuesday at the Semafor World Economy event in Washington, DC, that the company has confidentially filed for an initial public offering. Co-CEO Unveils Kraken's Mission Sethi said Kraken's goal is to give customers access to advanced trading and "directional bets" that are often available only to institutions. He compared that aspiration to the kinds of quantitative and market infrastructure used by major names like Citadel, Jane Street, and JPMorgan. "What they want at the end of the day is what Citadel and Jane Street have, or JPMorgan has, and they want it accessible to them," Sethi said. He added, "That's our mission: How do we make all these products open. We want to be able to help enable what you want to do with your own capital." During the same appearance, Sethi also addressed broader concerns about technology -- specifically, fears that artificial intelligence could significantly disrupt software-as-a-service businesses. According to Semafor's report on the matter, he argued that those worries have been overstated. "There's always a certain set of companies that get disrupted by technology, and that has continued to happen," he said. He also noted that many modern businesses are already built on software, saying, "I also don't think there are companies today that aren't run by software in some ways, and so today we're seeing AI just proliferating at a faster and faster pace." Deutsche Börse Deal Kraken's IPO filing comes on the heels of a major ownership move reported earlier on April 14. Deutsche Börse, the German exchange operator, said Tuesday that it acquired a $200 million stake in Kraken. The investment was made through the purchase of existing shares in a secondary market transaction, according to Reuters, and results in a fully diluted stake of 1.5%, Deutsche Börse said. Deutsche Börse said the new investment is intended to deepen that relationship. It described the expanded cooperation as covering regulated crypto, tokenized markets, and derivatives, along with improved liquidity for institutional clients across different geographies. Kraken IPO Plans Move Forward After Confidential Filing, Co-CEO Sethi Revealed

Kraken Confirms Confidential IPO Filing as Deutsche Börse Takes $200M Stake

Co-CEO Arjun Sethi said the exchange wants to give retail traders access to the same tools used by firms like Citadel and JPMorgan. Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi confirmed Tuesday that the crypto exchange has confidentially filed for an initial public offering, speaking at Semafor's World Economy conference in Washington, D.C. The news comes alongside a $200 million investment from Deutsche Börse, Germany's largest stock exchange operator, in Kraken's parent company, Payward, for a roughly 1.5% fully diluted stake. The deal implies a valuation of approximately $13.3 billion, a 33% haircut from the $20 billion Kraken commanded during its $800 million fundraise in November 2025. Kraken originally filed its draft S-1 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in November 2025, one day after closing that funding round, which drew backing from Citadel Securities, Jane Street, and DRW Venture Capital. The exchange has not disclosed the size or pricing of its planned offering, saying it will finalize terms once regulators complete their review and market conditions settle. Speaking at the conference, Sethi framed the IPO push as part of a broader mission to democratize sophisticated financial tools. "What they want at the end of the day is what Citadel and Jane Street have, or JPMorgan has, and they want it accessible to them," he said. "That's our mission: How do we make all these products open?" The Deutsche Börse investment deepens a commercial partnership first announced in December 2025, centred on integrating Kraken's xStocks tokenized equities platform into Deutsche Börse's digital asset infrastructure. Kraken has been aggressively expanding in recent months. The exchange launched CME futures trading in October 2025, giving users access to traditional commodities and equity index contracts alongside crypto. Its xStocks tokenized equities product surpassed $10 billion in cumulative trading volume in November, and in March, Nasdaq tapped Kraken as a settlement layer for its own tokenized stock initiative. The regulatory backdrop has also shifted sharply in Kraken's favor. The SEC dismissed its lawsuit against the exchange in March 2025 with no admission of wrongdoing, part of a broader pullback from crypto enforcement under the current administration. Kraken is the second-largest U.S.-based centralized exchange behind Coinbase, which went public via direct listing in 2021.

Wall Street CEOs' First Reactions to Anthropic's Mythos

As banking leaders tout A.I.'s potential, they warn its power is also creating complex new vulnerabilities. Banks are among the most enthusiastic adopters of A.I., but also the most exposed to the technology's growing cybersecurity threats. That vulnerability came into sharper focus earlier this month with the release of Anthropic's Mythos Preview, a highly advanced A.I. model that's drawn concern across Wall Street. On earnings calls, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Goldman Sachs' David Solomon said they are testing Mythos to better understand the new risks that come with rapid advances in A.I. "While we're trying to get the benefit of A.I., we're also very cognizant of the risks." Those risks are central to Mythos, which Anthropic describes as too dangerous to release publicly because of its ability to exploit vulnerabilities in critical software. Instead, the company has invited a consortium of major businesses, including JPMorgan, to test the model internally for use in strengthening their cybersecurity defenses. The preview effort, called Project Glasswing, takes its name from the glasswing butterflies, which use transparent wings to hide in plain sight -- a metaphor Anthropic says reflects how hidden cyber weaknesses can evade detection. The initiative, which includes other Wall Street banks as well as Apple, Google and Nvidia, will be funded by $100 million in model usage credits from Anthropic. The release of advanced models like Mythos has created "additional vulnerabilities" beyond banks, Dimon said. "Banks, of course, are attached to exchanges and all these other things that create other layers of risks. It's a complex one." Dimon, who has led JPMorgan for two decades, emphasized that cybersecurity remains a top priority for the nation's largest bank by assets and market capitalization. "We spend a lot of money. We've got top experts. We're in constant contact with the government." Following the Mythos release, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell convened leading Wall Street executives in Washington, D.C. last week to discuss the newfound threats posed by the model. While Dimon was reportedly unable to attend, peers including Bank of America's Brian Moynihan, Citigroup's Jane Fraser, Morgan Stanley's Ted Pick and Wells Fargo's Charlie Scharf joined the meeting. Officials of foreign central banks, including the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, are hosting similar briefings with top financial leaders. Solomon also attended the Treasury meeting. Goldman Sachs, he said during his bank's earnings call yesterday (April 13). "Obviously, the LLMs are making rapid progress," Solomon told analysts. "We're hyper-aware of the enhanced capabilities of these new models." Despite their caution, both Dimon and Solomon remain confident that A.I. will ultimately transform banking for the better. JPMorgan has already applied A.I. to more than 500 use cases, while Goldman has used it in coding and translation and earlier this year partnered with Anthropic to incorporate its Claude model across accounting and compliance. "It will not be a straight line whenever you have acceleration in new technology," said Solomon. "There are going to be bumps, and there are going to be risk issues, and there are going to be recalibrations."

'God of chaos' asteroid to pass close to Earth in 2029

(NEW YORK) -- A rare asteroid will soon be visible to the naked eye in a rare celestial event, according to astronomers. Asteroid 99942 Apophis - named after the Egyptian deity of chaos, darkness and fire - is expected to safely pass close to Earth on April 13, 2029, according to NASA. The asteroid will pass within roughly 20,000 miles of Earth - nearly 12 times closer than the moon's average distance from Earth, and closer than many satellites in geosynchronous orbit - making it one one of the closest approaches ever recorded for an object if its size and a "very rare event," according to NASA. The approach will be visible to observers on the ground in the Eastern Hemisphere, weather permitting, according to NASA. It will be close enough that sky-watchers won't need a telescope or binoculars to see it, astronomers say. When Apophis was first discovered in 2004, it was labeled a potentially hazardous asteroid because of the possibility that it could impact Earth in 2029, 2036 or 2068, according to NASA. After closely tracking the asteroid and its orbit using optical telescopes and ground-based radar, astronomers are now confident that there is no risk of Apophis impacting Earth for at least 100 years. The Earth's gravitational pull could change the asteroid's orbit around the sun as it passes in 2029, making the orbit slightly larger or the orbital period slightly longer, but the risk of impact with Earth will remain the same, NASA says. Its close passage will also afford astronomers around the world the opportunity to learn more about the asteroid. Apophis is the Greek name for the Egyptian god known as Apep. The name was proposed by the astronomers who discovered the asteroid: Roy Tucker, David Tholen and Fabrizio Bernardi of the Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson, Arizona. The asteroid is a relic of the early solar system from about 4.6 billion years ago, made of leftover raw material that was never part of a planet or moon, according to NASA. Though its exact size and shape is unknown, it has a mean diameter of about 1,115 feet and a long axis of at least 1,480 feet. Apophis' surface is weathered due to eons of exposure to space weather, including solar wind and cosmic rays, according to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Observatories around the world and in space will observe the asteroid's historic approach to Earth in order to better understand its physical properties. NASA has redirected a spacecraft to rendezvous with Apophis shortly after its close approach in 2029, while the European Space Agency is sending a spacecraft to study it. When the April 2029 flyby occurs, Apophis will become a member of the "Apollo" group, the family of asteroids that cross Earth's orbit but that themselves have orbits around the sun that are wider than the Earth's, according to the ESA.

Kraken files for ipo as valuation drops to $13.3b

⚠ Key point: Insider security breach prompts tough response from Kraken. Kraken, a San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange, has confidentially submitted paperwork for an initial public offering, marking a renewed push toward going public after earlier delays linked to market volatility. The company's intent was confirmed by co-CEO Arjun Sethi during the Semafor World Economy event in Washington, D.C., reflecting ongoing efforts despite recent challenges in the crypto industry. ContentsIPO plans amid fluctuating valuationsFederal Reserve master account milestoneDeutsche Börse's $200 million investment and insider incidentIPO plans amid fluctuating valuations In April, Kraken's valuation was reported at $13.3 billion following a new funding round, a significant decrease from its $20 billion high in late 2025. Major investors such as Citadel Securities participated in this round, which mirrored more cautious attitudes across the broader digital asset sector as prices and volumes receded. Arjun Sethi described Kraken's aim of democratizing institutional-level trading features for everyday users. He drew parallels to advanced offerings at established financial firms, indicating a desire to close the gap between retail and institutional access to sophisticated financial products. Kraken previously paused its IPO preparation amid declining trading activity and digital asset prices, but the exchange has consistently indicated that public listing remains an option pending more stable industry conditions. Recent trends have pressured valuations of newly listed crypto companies, contributing to a more cautious approach across the sector. Federal Reserve master account milestone Kraken recently obtained a master account with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. This development adds direct connectivity to major U.S. payment rails, including the Fedwire system, allowing the exchange to clear dollar transactions without relying on intermediary financial institutions. While the new account offers improved settlement efficiency, it does not include interest payments on balances or access to Federal Reserve direct lending. The move elevates Kraken's operational standing among digital asset firms seeking more direct ties to traditional financial infrastructure. Deutsche Börse's $200 million investment and insider incident On the same day as the IPO announcement, Deutsche Börse revealed an agreement to invest $200 million in Kraken, acquiring a 1.5 percent stake in its parent, Payward Inc. The proposed share purchase, which remains subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026. Deutsche Börse, a leading German financial marketplace operator, has been expanding its presence in digital assets and aims to integrate regulated crypto, tokenized products, and institutional trading through collaborations such as this one. This latest partnership builds on previous announcements aimed at bridging the gap between traditional finance and digital asset markets. It reflects a wider industry trend of established financial institutions seeking exposure to the evolving crypto market through equity investments and technical integration. Kraken also reported two insider security incidents this week. Support staff accessed limited customer data affecting about 2,000 accounts, though trading systems and client funds remained secure. The breach led to an attempted extortion by a criminal group in possession of internal videos, which Kraken refused to pay. The company's response included removing staff access, identifying those involved, notifying users, and enhancing internal controls. Kraken is cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues. These episodes highlight persistent insider risks faced by digital asset exchanges and follow a recent report of a separate cybersecurity breach at Galaxy Digital that did not compromise user assets or information.

Commentary: Chaos Is The Leader In California's Hot Mess Of A Governor's Race

Commentary: Chaos is the leader in California's hot mess of a governor's race - BERITAJA is one of the most discussed topics today. In this article, you will find a clear explanation, key facts, and the latest updates related to this topic, presented in a concise and easy-to-understand way. Read more news on Beritaja. SACRAMENTO -- Eric Swalwell is out -- of the California gubernatorial title and Congress, spending clip pinch family, arsenic they say, aft allegations of rape and intersexual misconduct. That could beryllium considered bully news for the slew of Democrats who stay successful the running, and moreover the two Republicans presently polling adjacent the top. But this muddled run season has intelligibly grounded to seizure voters' imagination. This contempt a activity scandal, a billionaire spending his millions, a acheronian equine spending tech-bro millions, a statement wherever the invitations were truthful controversial the arena was canceled and a sheriff seizing ballots successful a grounded MAGA-pandering stunt. (President Trump ended up backing his opponent.) After each that, you'd deliberation Californians would care, astatine slightest successful a spectacle benignant of way. But they don't. At slightest not yet. So is "undecided" going to stay the leader successful the title until voters are forced to capable successful their ballots? Even Republicans, pinch the Trump-endorsed Steve Hilton and Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco arsenic their main choices, can't dress up their minds. Times columnists Anita Chabria and Mark Z. Barabak ponder why the title is specified a basking mess, who benefits from the Swalwell implosion, whether anyone will ever get excited about immoderate of these candidates -- and what each that intends for the early of California. Chabria: We are little than 50 days retired from the superior connected June 2 and someway this title remains some boring and unpredictable. There's tons of talk about whether the 2 remaining apical Democratic candidates, erstwhile Rep. Katie Porter and billionaire investor Tom Steyer, will scoop up Swalwell's supporters -- aliases if a second-tier contender specified arsenic San José Mayor Matt Mahan, erstwhile authorities Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra aliases ex-L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa whitethorn emergence from the near-dead pinch a astonishment surge. With specified a short magnitude of clip and candidates who person already proved their deficiency of charisma, I'm worried that what happens adjacent really comes down to money -- which Steyer and Mahan have. Mahan's tech-industry backers are already said to beryllium lining up millions of dollars successful buys to blitz his sanction and image connected our consciousness successful these last days, for illustration a meal cereal we didn't cognize we wanted to buy. Ditto Steyer, though he's sewage a overmuch higher floor plan and backing from respective cardinal unions. Do you deliberation that money is going to norm the decorativeness line successful this one, aliases do immoderate of the different candidates person a changeable done sheer determination? Barabak: Let's beryllium real. If Tom Steyer was immoderate schmo named Tom Steinway without a immense luck buoying his governmental ambitions, he wouldn't beryllium remotely successful the running, overmuch little talked about arsenic 1 of the putative front-runners. As it is, Steyer has burned done the balanced of a mini country's GDP and he's still not cracking 15% successful polls. That's not precisely a ringing endorsement, notwithstanding each those he's managed to leverage done his wealth. California has a agelong history of rejecting moneybag candidates. In fact, not 1 has ever been elected governor. That said, we've ne'er seen a title for illustration this 1 -- and that was earlier Swalwell's candidacy went up successful salacious smoke. The closest parallel -- absent that above-referenced self-immolation -- was successful 1998. Voters weren't crazy about the 2 starring candidates, including a rich | feline blasting them pinch a firehose of TV advertising, truthful they opted for the colorless feline moving acold backmost successful the pack. (And yes, beloved reader, Gray Davis was yet recalled, but that came good aft the fact.) There's a saying successful Iowa, about its statesmanlike caucuses. The concealed is to organize, organize, shape and past get basking astatine the end. California, obviously, is not the benignant of authorities you triumph by holding a cardinal and 1 kaffeeklatsches. But the rule -- laic the groundwork, past count connected timing and bully luck -- could use here. Who mightiness that be? Mahan's abrupt rate gusher can't hurt. But your conjecture is arsenic bully arsenic mine. Chabria: The point about organizing is that for Democrats, overmuch of that work is done by labour unions. They supply the people, the telephone banks, the doorway knockers. The California Labor Federation this clip about endorsed basically everybody (Swalwell, Steyer, Villaraigosa and Porter), giving nary of the Democratic candidates an advantage. In a uncommon move, the California Labor Federation and Service Employees International Union California pulled their endorsement of Swalwell, arsenic person different unions aft these allegations came out. But labour remains divided among the different candidates (though Steyer seems to beryllium gaining unions' affections), a existent problem erstwhile it comes to that benignant of organizing. It's that section of existent group powerfulness that makes maine interest money will person moreover much power this clip around. But also, location is the unknown. There's chatter online that a celebrated aliases beardown contender (Kamala? A celebrity?) could shape a last-minute write-in campaign. Although authorities rule nary longer allows a write-in for the wide election, there's a mini model near for 1 successful the primary. What do you think? Could personification caller swoop successful and excite the voters capable to spell rogue? Barabak: Well, there's Steve Cloobeck. Who, you're about apt asking? He's a rich | existent property developer who quit the title successful November aft an unsung yearlong campaign. Upon exiting, he enthusiastically endorsed his adjacent friend, Eric Swalwell. Speaking pinch our workfellow Seema Mehta, Cloobeck said he wished the Legislature would amend the authorities Constitution truthful he could record to reenter the governor's title -- a wishful thinking correct up location alongside President Trump comparing himself to Jesus. Seriously, governmental gossips abhor a vacuum, truthful they capable it pinch each sorts of fantastical scenarios of candidates riding successful connected achromatic horses and rescuing america from ... what exactly? I've been the uncommon voice arguing this governor's title is not astatine each boring. Boring would person been Kamala Harris holding a commanding lead for the Democratic information and group speculating whether anyone could extremity her. While this bunch of candidates won't nonstop laser ray dancing crossed the darkened sky, location are plentifulness of rather could group still successful the running, unless you're looking for personification to entertain and/or connection California 4 years of distraction and diversion. And we've seen what putting a reality-TV prima successful the White House has gotten us. Chabria: At the extremity of the day, aliases astatine slightest predetermination day, this is simply a mobility of whom we spot pinch the early of California. Ultimately, that's why this title is simply a basking messiness -- nary of the candidates, Republican aliases Democrat, person offered a imagination inspiring capable to make voters want to spot them pinch the adjacent 4 aliases 8 years. To me, that's the existent nonaccomplishment here. I don't deliberation voters would mind boring astatine all, if it was dolled up pinch credibility and competence. I work together pinch you that we don't request different reality prima successful immoderate elected office. And much than 1 of these candidates has the skills to tally the state. But successful an era of deceit, arrogance and flashy incompetence, voters do want personification they consciousness they could trust. So far, nary of the candidates person delivered that consciousness of security, that they are campaigning arsenic a nationalist servant -- alternatively of the thirsty contender hoping for a rose. So either personification steps up and earns the rose, aliases it goes to the top-two least-worst. The June superior is holding connected to her secrets for now. Barabak: You cognize me; ever 1 to look connected the agleam side! If you're a Republican, the agleam broadside is the agelong shot, but not impossible, imaginable of Bianco and Hilton nabbing some spots connected June 2. That would mean 1 of the 2 lands successful the governor's agency successful January, notwithstanding California's overwhelmingly Democratic leaning. For an unaffiliated elector and governmental noncombatant for illustration me, a Californian who profoundly cares about my location state, the agleam broadside is this: At slightest group are yet paying attraction to the governor's race. So dive in! You've sewage conscionable nether 7 weeks to dress up your mind.
